Vijay Lights Christmas Tree at TVK’s Equality Celebration in Mamallapuram
Mamallapuram, December 22, 2025 – In a heartwarming display of unity and inclusivity, superstar-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay lit the Christmas tree and cut a massive cake with children at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)’s first-ever “Equality Christmas Celebration” held on Monday at the Four Points by Sheraton Resort & Convention Centre in Mamallapuram.
The invitation-only event, attended by approximately 1,500 guests who entered via QR code passes, saw Vijay distributing gifts to children and warmly interacting with young fans. He also received a miniature temple model as a gift from Dr. N. Marie Wilson, a prominent figure at the gathering.
In his address, Vijay emphasized communal harmony and secularism, stating that love, equality, and compassion are the core values of Tamil Nadu’s soil. “Surely, one light will be born; that light will guide us,” he said metaphorically, assuring attendees of TVK’s unwavering commitment to protecting social and religious harmony ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. “Both I and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam are 100% committed to safeguarding social harmony and religious amity with firm secular principles. Praise the Lord,” he added, drawing applause from the crowd that included priests, community leaders, and party cadres.
The joyful celebrations underscored TVK’s outreach to minority communities, projecting an image of inclusive politics in a state known for its tradition of coexistence across festivals like Pongal, Diwali, Ramzan, and Christmas.
However, the event sparked online controversy, with BJP Tamil Nadu leader K. Annamalai questioning Vijay’s silence on the recent Thiruparankundram temple lamp controversy – a dispute over lighting the traditional Karthigai Deepam at a hilltop pillar near a dargah in Madurai, which has fueled debates on religious traditions and communal harmony. Critics accused Vijay of selective positioning, while TVK supporters defended the party’s stance on Tamil Nadu’s long-standing culture of peaceful coexistence.
As TVK gears up for the 2026 polls, events like this highlight Vijay’s strategic focus on unity and secularism, positioning the party as a fresh alternative in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
