Bengaluru, July 14, 2025 – The Indian film industry mourns the loss of veteran actress B Saroja Devi, who passed away today at the age of 87 due to age-related ailments at her residence in Malleswaram, Bengaluru. Known as the “Abhinaya Saraswathi” (Goddess of Acting) in Kannada cinema and “Kannadathu Paingili” (Kannada’s Parrot) in Tamil cinema, Saroja Devi leaves behind an unparalleled legacy in Indian cinema, having starred in over 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi industries.

Saroja Devi, born on January 7, 1938, began her illustrious career at 17 with the 1955 Kannada film Mahakavi Kalidasa, which earned her a National Award. Her breakthrough in Tamil cinema came with Nadodi Mannan (1958) alongside MGR, forming a legendary on-screen partnership that delivered 26 consecutive hit films, including Enga Veetu Pillai and Anbe Vaa. Her collaborations with icons like Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, N.T. Rama Rao, and Rajkumar solidified her status as a trailblazer, earning her the title of Chaturbhasha Taare (Four-language Star).

The actress, a recipient of the Padma Shri (1969) and Padma Bhushan (1992), was celebrated for her grace, versatility, and emotive performances. Her notable films include Kittur Chennamma, Babruvahana, Kalyana Parisu, and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya. Even after her marriage in 1967, she remained a sought-after star, particularly in Tamil cinema.

Tributes poured in from across the nation. Superstar Rajinikanth expressed his grief on X, stating, “The great actress Saroja Devi, who won the hearts of millions, is no longer with us. May her soul rest in peace.” Actor Khushbu Sundar called her “amma” in a heartfelt note, saying, “An era of golden cinema comes to an end.” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah mourned her loss, noting, “Her passing leaves the world of art poorer.” Actress Simran shared, “Her legacy in Indian cinema will remain eternal. I was blessed to share the screen with her in Once More.”

Saroja Devi’s funeral is expected to take place in Bengaluru this afternoon, though details are yet to be confirmed by her family. Her contributions to Indian cinema, marked by elegance and unmatched talent, will continue to inspire generations.
