India’s Domestic Air Traffic Market Share in 2025: IndiGo Leads, Air India Follows
New Delhi, June 16, 2025 – India’s aviation sector continues to soar, with domestic air traffic showcasing robust growth in 2025. According to recent data, IndiGo dominates the market with a commanding 64% share, while Air India holds a strong second place at 27%. Newer entrants like Akasa Air and struggling carriers like SpiceJet capture smaller slices of the pie, with 5% and 2.6% respectively, as other regional airlines account for the remaining 1.4%. This market distribution highlights the competitive dynamics shaping India’s skies, driven by fleet size, operational efficiency, and consumer preferences.
IndiGo’s Unchallenged Dominance: 64% Market Share
IndiGo, operating a formidable fleet of approximately 430 aircraft, remains the undisputed leader in India’s domestic aviation market. Its low-cost, no-frills model continues to resonate with travelers, offering affordability and reliability. In 2025, IndiGo’s market share stands at 64%, reflecting its ability to maintain high passenger load factors and operational efficiency. The airline’s strategic fleet expansion, including orders for hundreds of Airbus A320neo aircraft, positions it to meet growing demand while keeping costs low.
“IndiGo’s dominance is a testament to its operational excellence and customer-centric approach,” said aviation analyst Priya Sharma. “With a focus on punctuality and affordability, it’s no surprise they command nearly two-thirds of the market.”
Air India’s Resurgence: 27% Market Share
Air India, backed by the Tata Group and operating around 300 planes, has solidified its position as the second-largest player with a 27% market share. The airline’s ongoing transformation, post-privatization, includes fleet modernization, improved customer service, and the integration of Vistara and Air India Express. These efforts have boosted its appeal among both leisure and business travelers.
Air India’s focus on premium services and an expanded network has helped it capture a significant portion of the market. However, challenges like supply chain issues and engine groundings have slightly tempered its growth trajectory in 2025.
Akasa Air’s Steady Rise: 5% Market Share
Akasa Air, a relatively new entrant with a fleet of around 30 aircraft, has carved out a 5% market share in 2025. Known for its punctuality and customer-friendly policies, Akasa Air has quickly gained traction, particularly among younger travelers. The airline’s ambitious expansion plans, including a significant aircraft order expected by the end of 2023, signal its intent to challenge established players.
“Akasa Air’s growth is impressive for such a young airline,” noted industry expert Rajesh Kumar. “Their focus on operational efficiency and passenger experience is paying off.”
SpiceJet’s Struggles: 2.6% Market Share
SpiceJet, operating approximately 60 planes, holds a modest 2.6% market share in 2025. The budget carrier has faced significant headwinds, including financial difficulties, insolvency pleas, and a high cancellation rate. Despite these challenges, SpiceJet continues to serve niche routes and maintain a loyal customer base. Its market share, however, has declined sharply from a peak of 10.7% in February 2022.
“SpiceJet’s survival hinges on stabilizing its finances and operations,” said Kumar. “Without significant restructuring, it risks losing further ground.”
Others: 1.4% Market Share
The remaining 1.4% of the market is split among smaller regional carriers like Alliance Air, Star Air, Fly91, and Flybig. These airlines cater to underserved routes under India’s UDAN scheme, connecting remote regions to major hubs. While their market share is small, their role in enhancing regional connectivity is critical to India’s aviation growth.
Key Trends Driving India’s Aviation Market in 2025
India’s domestic air traffic has grown steadily in 2025, with passenger numbers reaching over 14 million in March alone, an 8% increase year-on-year. This growth is fueled by rising disposable incomes, improved airport infrastructure, and government initiatives like UDAN. However, challenges such as volatile aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices and supply chain disruptions continue to impact airlines’ profitability.
- Punctuality Matters: IndiGo leads with an 88.1% on-time performance (OTP) in March 2025, followed closely by Akasa Air at 86.9%. Air India and SpiceJet lag behind, with OTPs of 67.6% and 54.8%, respectively.
- Fleet Expansion: Major airlines are doubling down on fleet growth. IndiGo’s massive Airbus order and Air India’s mix of Boeing and Airbus jets underscore the sector’s long-term optimism.
- Regional Connectivity: Smaller carriers are expanding under the UDAN scheme, with 100 new airports planned by 2024, boosting access to tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
What Lies Ahead for India’s Aviation Sector?
India’s aviation market is projected to reach USD 14.78 billion in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.03% through 2030. As the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market, India is poised for significant expansion, driven by increasing demand and infrastructure development.
However, airlines must navigate challenges like rising fuel costs, a weakening rupee, and operational inefficiencies to sustain growth. For passengers, the growing duopoly of IndiGo and Air India raises concerns about fare hikes and reduced competition, though Akasa Air’s rise offers hope for a more balanced market.
