Heavy Rainfall in Gujarat:
Surat Roads Flooded, Vehicle Drivers Face Severe Difficulties
Surat, Gujarat, June 23, 2025 – Torrential rainfall in Surat, Gujarat, since last night has left roads submerged, causing significant challenges for vehicle drivers. The sudden downpour has created flood-like conditions in several parts of the city, leading to traffic jams, road closures, and disruptions to daily life. Low-lying areas in Surat are particularly affected, posing a major hurdle for commuters and motorists.
Impact of Rainfall in Surat
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in south Gujarat districts, including Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and Tapi, for the coming days. The rains have inundated numerous roads, with severe waterlogging reported in areas like Ved Darwaja, Kadodara Road, and Nanpura. Despite efforts by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to drain water, the intensity of the rainfall has made the task challenging.
In the past 24 hours, Surat recorded significant rainfall, resulting in waterlogged roads and highways. Vehicles have been stuck in flooded areas, exacerbating traffic congestion. Some roads have also been damaged, adding to the woes of motorists. Ongoing metro rail construction in Surat has already narrowed several roads, and the rainfall has worsened the situation, making navigation even more difficult.
Challenges for Vehicle Drivers
Vehicle drivers in Surat are grappling with severe difficulties due to the flooded roads. Navigating waterlogged streets has become hazardous, with many vehicles breaking down or getting stranded. School buses, auto-rickshaws, and other vehicles have been stuck in traffic for hours. Kadodara Road, already plagued by metro construction-related traffic issues, has seen intensified problems due to the rains.
A local resident, Rajesh Kumar, shared his ordeal: “The roads are completely flooded. Driving through water is dangerous, and traffic jams are making it take hours to reach destinations.” Local authorities are working to manage traffic and clear water, but the heavy rainfall continues to hamper efforts.
Authorities’ Response
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has deployed multiple teams to address the waterlogging issue. Pumps are being used to drain water, and fire department teams are assisting in clearing roads. However, water remains stagnant in some areas. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been mobilized across Gujarat, including Surat, to evacuate residents from low-lying areas to safer locations.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a meeting with the state disaster management team to review the situation and directed officials to provide necessary assistance. Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured the state government of full support to manage the crisis.
Weather Forecast and Alerts
The IMD forecasts continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in Surat and other south Gujarat districts in the coming days, which could worsen the waterlogging situation. Authorities have urged residents to avoid low-lying areas and relocate to safer zones if necessary.
Advice for Surat Residents
Authorities advise Surat residents to exercise caution during this period of heavy rainfall. Avoid traveling on flooded roads and stay updated with traffic advisories. In emergencies, contact the NDRF helpline at +91-9711077372.
