10 Years of Digital India: A Decade of Transformation

New Delhi, July 1, 2025 – Today marks a historic milestone as India celebrates 10 years of the Digital India initiative, a transformative vision launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 1, 2015. This ambitious program has reshaped the nation’s digital landscape, bridging divides, empowering citizens, and positioning India as a global leader in digital innovation. From revolutionizing governance to boosting the digital economy, Digital India has become a people’s movement, driving inclusive growth and technological advancement.

A Journey of Digital Empowerment

The Digital India initiative was launched to create a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy by enhancing digital infrastructure, promoting digital literacy, and improving e-governance. Over the past decade, it has touched the lives of 140 crore Indians, transforming how they learn, transact, and access government services.

In 2014, India had just 25 crore internet connections. Today, that number has surged to over 97 crore, with high-speed internet reaching remote areas like Galwan and Siachen. The BharatNet project has laid over 6.92 lakh kilometers of optical fiber cable, connecting 2.18 lakh Gram Panchayats and bringing digital access to rural India. Data prices have plummeted from Rs 308/GB in 2014 to Rs 9.34/GB in 2022, making the internet affordable for millions.

Key Achievements of Digital India

1. Unprecedented Digital Infrastructure Growth

  • 5G Rollout: India’s 5G deployment is among the fastest globally, with 4.81 lakh base stations installed in just two years. By April 2025, 4.74 lakh 5G towers were operational, covering 99.6% of districts.
  • Optical Fiber Expansion: Over 42 lakh kilometers of optical fiber cable—equivalent to 11 times the distance between Earth and the Moon—now connects even the most remote villages.
  • Rural Connectivity: The Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA) has certified over 47.8 million rural citizens as digitally literate, empowering them to access online services.

2. Revolutionizing Digital Transactions

  • India leads the world in real-time digital payments, handling nearly half of global transactions. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processes over 100 billion transactions annually, making cashless payments seamless.
  • Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) has transferred over Rs 44 lakh crore directly to citizens, saving Rs 3.48 lakh crore by eliminating middlemen.

3. Empowering Citizens and Businesses

  • SVAMITVA Scheme: Over 2.4 crore property cards have been issued, and 6.47 lakh villages mapped, resolving long-standing land disputes.
  • Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Government e-Marketplace (GeM): These platforms have empowered MSMEs, with GeM recording Rs 4.09 lakh crore in gross merchandise value in FY 2024–25.
  • Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI): Systems like Aadhaar, DigiLocker, and CoWIN are now global benchmarks, with India managing the Global DPI Repository for the Global South.

4. Advancing AI and Innovation

  • The India AI Mission and projects like BharatGen are fostering AI development tailored to Indian languages and contexts, positioning India as a hub for digital innovation.
  • Initiatives like “One Nation, One Subscription” are democratizing access to global knowledge, benefiting researchers and students nationwide.

A People’s Movement

As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman noted, Digital India is not just a government program but a movement that has bridged the digital divide. “From bringing internet access to remote corners to making government services available online, Digital India is central to building an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” she said in a post on X. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal echoed this, highlighting India’s shift from digital governance to global digital leadership.

Prime Minister Modi, in his LinkedIn blog titled A Decade of Digital India, emphasized the initiative’s inclusive approach: “When the intent is right, innovation empowers the less empowered. When the approach is inclusive, technology brings change to those on the margins.” He urged innovators and entrepreneurs to seize this moment, stating, “The world is looking at India for the next digital breakthrough. Let us build what empowers, unites, and uplifts.”

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite its successes, Digital India faces challenges like digital scams and cyber threats. Recent reports highlight crores moving across ghost accounts, underscoring the need for robust cybersecurity. The government is addressing these through initiatives like the India Energy Stack, led by Nandan Nilekani, to create secure, standardized digital frameworks for sectors like energy.

Looking forward, PM Modi envisions the next decade as even more transformative. With India’s digital economy projected to cross $1 trillion by 2030, driven by mobile-first behavior and seamless payments, the nation is poised to become a global digital capital.

Conclusion

The Digital India initiative has redefined governance, empowered millions, and laid the foundation for a tech-forward future. From rural connectivity to global digital leadership, it has proven that technology can unite and uplift when driven by the right intent. As India embarks on the next phase of this journey, the world watches eagerly for its next digital breakthrough.
